{"id":15549,"date":"2017-05-03T16:03:48","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T15:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=15549"},"modified":"2017-05-02T10:47:46","modified_gmt":"2017-05-02T09:47:46","slug":"english-heritage-challenged-over-cliffords-tower-in-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=15549","title":{"rendered":"English Heritage challenged over Clifford&#8217;s Tower in York"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>English Heritage is planning to dig under York\u2019s most iconic of locations, the 12th-century Clifford\u2019s Tower, and build a visitor centre, but the fight to stop the works is to go to the high court.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At the same time campaigners fighting the new visitor centre at Clifford\u2019s Tower are calling on English Heritage to abandon its plans and sign up to an alternative vision for the area.\u00a0 They say the charity should scrap its proposal to build the centre into the mound at the foot of the tower.\u00a0 Instead they should work with City of York Council on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkmix.com\/life\/end-castle-car-park-7-plans-change-one-neglected-part-york-good\/\">new vision for the Castle Gateway site<\/a> unveiled last month.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a32.5m proposal went through the council\u2019s consultation period in January 2016 when the city was engaged in cleaning up after a devastating set of floods and after a\u00a0crowdfunded challenge\u00a0by independent city councillor, Johnny Hayes, that planning process is subject to a judicial review\u00a0at the high court. Hayes said: \u2018In every way this proposal is wrong. When I heard it, I thought it was a bad joke.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The planned changes, drawn up by London-based architects Hugh Broughton, are to revamp the interior of the tower, an area that most people agree has been a disappointment to visitors, and create a covered spiral walkway that will reveal parts unseen.
