{"id":1544,"date":"2010-07-21T18:00:38","date_gmt":"2010-07-21T18:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=1544"},"modified":"2010-07-21T18:00:38","modified_gmt":"2010-07-21T18:00:38","slug":"dcms%e2%80%99-post-war-listing-cases-4-outcomes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=1544","title":{"rendered":"DCMS\u2019 post-war listing cases: 4 outcomes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The Milton Keynes shopping centre has, on 16 July, been listed, at Grade II, by Tourism and Heritage Minister John Penrose, while requests to overturn two earlier listing decisions \u2013 for Coventry Market and the Castle House Co-op in Sheffield \u2013 have also been rejected by the minister.<\/div>\n<p>However, he has turned down the application to list the Gatehouse at St. Anne\u2019s College, Oxford.<\/p>\n<p>John Penrose said: \u201cPost war buildings can, more than others, divide opinion. \u00a0The \u2018test of time\u2019 cannot be rushed, so the minister \u2013 me on this occasion &#8211; has to weigh the advice of experts and, where there is no clear consensus, find a way through that helps protect what\u2019s truly excellent. \u00a0My decision to list Milton Keynes Shopping Centre and to reject calls to de-list important modern buildings in Coventry and Sheffield demonstrates this. These are interesting and eye-catching buildings that clearly merit the extra protection that comes with listed status.<\/p>\n<p>They are not, of course, guaranteed immortality.
