{"id":15119,"date":"2017-03-10T19:00:03","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T19:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=15119"},"modified":"2017-03-11T12:44:54","modified_gmt":"2017-03-11T12:44:54","slug":"ihbc-stba-update-to-bonfield-make-each-home-count-with-different-but-complementary-approach-to-traditional-fabric","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=15119","title":{"rendered":"IHBC-STBA update to Bonfield: Make \u2018Each Home Count\u2019 with \u2018Different but Complementary\u2019 approach to traditional fabric"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/BonfieldReview2016-e1482943479737.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14574\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/BonfieldReview2016-212x300.png\" alt=\"Bonfield Review 2016\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>In a well-received and incisive presentation to an audience that included Peter Bonfield, John Preston, IHBC\u2019s Green Panel Chair and Heritage Chair of the STBA, called for traditional buildings to be given a \u2018Different but Complementary\u2019 approach in Bonfield\u2019s \u2018<em>Each Home Counts<\/em>\u2019 plans for domestic energy use and provision.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The concerns were highlighted in Preston\u2019s talk at the Advisory Group meeting of the Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance (STBA) on 21 February.\u00a0 The event offered STBA members \u2013 which include the IHBC &#8211;\u00a0 the chance to hear and question Peter Bonfield, CEO of BRE and lead on the \u2018<em>Each Home Counts<\/em>\u2019 report for government on plans for managing energy in the built environment.<\/p>\n<p>Following Preston\u2019s critique, which was widely welcomed, IHBC Chair James Caird said: \u2018While all can welcome the wider moves towards \u2018greener\u2019 buildings, the IHBC\u2019s Consultations Panel was very disappointed that \u2018<em>Each Home Counts<\/em>\u2019 failed to consider traditional buildings, especially those with solid walls.\u00a0 This is a fundamental omission as such older buildings represent at least a quarter of the UK\u2019s building stock, undermining the principles of \u2018Each Home Counts\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;At the presentation, Peter\u00a0Bonfield was clearly impressed by our sector\u2019s depth of knowledge and approach to older buildings.\u00a0 While it was disappointing that he was not willing to respond to John\u2019s call for a Traditional Buildings Working Group, we are delighted to welcome the opportunity to for the IHBC, through our membership of STBA, to be represented on Implementation Groups and to be involved in their key pilot project in Cornwall.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>John Preston said: \u2018The sector needs to build on this positive start to impress Bonfield and others that a \u2018one size fits all\u2019 approach is not appropriate for traditional buildings.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Though all three STBA Chairs argued for a Traditional Buildings Working Group, and the 2015 <em>Solid Wall Literature Review<\/em> by Bonfield\u2019s own BRE, published by DECC, indicated that up to 35% of the dwelling stock is heritage or traditional buildings where the \u2018one size fits all\u2019 approach would not work, the best Bonfield offered was for STBA to nominate representatives to serve on the existing Implementation Groups, and to be involved in a large scale pilot project in Cornwall.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Members of the IHBC, and of the STBA, are firmly of the opinion that this is not enough, and we will continue to lobby government on these critical matters.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>For more background see the EAch Home Counts\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eachhomecounts.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a><\/p>\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/396363\/solid_wall_insulation_literature_review.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2015 BRE <em>Solid Wall Literature Review<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/JP-21.2.17-Each-Home-Counts-Heritage-for-STBA.pdf\">DOWNLOAD<\/a> John Preston\u2019s presentation to the STBA<\/p>\n<p>For the IHBC consultation response see<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"mljsmpPKJK\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=14854\">IHBC consultation response update: Each Home Counts (the \u2018Bonfield Review\u2019)<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute;
