There\u2019s an intense local debate between those who favour knocking down some of Wellington\u2019s historic but unsafe buildings and those who believe that at least some of them can be preserved, according to the Dominion Post<\/em> in New Zealand, as evidenced by the readers\u2019 comments on the piece.<\/h3>\n

Wellington has 170 earthquake-prone heritage buildings. Can they all be saved?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Developer Maurice Clark, a specialist in reviving heritage buildings, says no. \u2018Obviously not.\u2019 Not even a list of nationally significant buildings will be preserved in its entirety, he predicts. Wellington City Council\u2019s list is full of \u2018not-very-important\u2019 buildings, he says \u2013 the \u2018grotty little cafe\u2019 on Cuba St and so on.<\/p>\n

Councillor Iona Pannett, chairwoman of the council\u2019s strategy committee, says yes. Or nearly yes. There may be a handful that eventually need to be demolished, she says, but the vast majority of the buildings on the list can be preserved. \u2018I\u2019d hope within the next 10 to 15 years, we will be able to resolve this issue.\u2019<\/p>\n
