\"context115\"<\/a>The IHBC is delighted to announce that a new build house in Edinburgh\u2019s World Heritage Site (WHS) \u2013 Edinburgh architect Richard Murphy\u2019s own home in the capital\u2019s Hart Street \u2013 may be added to the prestigious list of award winning new development framed by heritage controls, which includes the 2013 Stirling Prize winner, Grade II* listed and scheduled Astley Castle.<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

Murphy\u2019s own house is the 2016 winner of the RIBA House of the Year – awarded to the best new house designed by an architect in the UK, which replaced the \u2018RIBA Manser Medal\u2019 \u2013 one of the highest awards offered by the profession.<\/p>\n

IHBC Director Se\u00e1n O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018This award is great news for the heritage sector as once again it proves that heritage standards and related planning controls can stimulate the very best in new architecture and design.\u2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The RIBA writes:<\/p>\n

Richard Murphy\u2019s own house in Edinburgh is a delightful essay in architecture.\u00a0 It speaks to its context with direct references to the Georgian terraces, and with a clever change of scale that is at once deferential and powerfully striking in the street.<\/p>\n

It makes great use of a small site, creating a delightful private outdoor space on the first floor, with light brought in through the roof, and a seemingly endless number of surprising spaces.\u00a0 It is a house that responds to the Scottish climate, opening up to the summer sun and then shutting itself down to create a snug refuge in the depth of winter. Sliding doors pull out of walls and roof shutters drop into place transforming the house from a light-filled space open to the exterior terrace, to an enclosed room, where candlelight wouldn\u2019t seem out of place.\u00a0 It does all this with wit and style, in an architecture that Murphy has honed over the years to make distinct and personal. It feels an intense and personal space, playful and inventive, each corner revealing something new.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
