{"id":14494,"date":"2016-12-16T17:31:49","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T17:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=14494"},"modified":"2016-12-16T17:31:49","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T17:31:49","slug":"no-1-poultry-listed-grade-ii-after-c20-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=14494","title":{"rendered":"No 1 Poultry listed Grade II* after C20 challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The C20 Society has reported its delight that No 1 Poultry, designed by James Stirling Michael Wilford and Associates, has been listed at Grade II*, following the C20 Society\u2019s successful legal challenge of the Secretary of State\u2019s earlier refusal to\u00a0list on the grounds that it was not \u2018at risk\u2019.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>C20 writes:<\/p>\n<p>Our original application for listing\u00a0was\u00a0prompted by proposals to extend and alter the principal fa\u00e7ades of the building, described by Historic England as\u00a0\u2019a highly significant and accomplished building by an architect of international repute, arguably the quintessential post-modern commercial building and public space.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Historic England recommended that it should be listed, and felt\u00a0that it had sufficient merit and that\u00a0\u2019the proposed changes, if effected, would alter the character and structure of the original building\u2019 but the Minister did not concur about the impact of the changes. We are glad that in this case the Secretary of State\u00a0agreed to review his original decision and list the building.<\/p>\n<p>However, we remain concerned that buildings under 30 years old can generally only be considered for listing if they are both \u2018outstanding\u2019 and \u2018at risk\u2019 and that threat is often seen to mean demolition when less drastic alterations can be extremely damaging.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s clearly no\u00a0consensus yet\u00a0about what constitutes Postmodernism, but both No 1 Poultry and Terry Farrell\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c20society.org.uk\/news\/c20-supports-listing-of-early-farrell-pomo-building\/\">Comyn Ching<\/a> (recently listed Grade II), are definitely of architectural and historic interest, if not as yet widely appreciated. It\u2019s part of our role to explore recent heritage and building\u00a0public and professional knowledge and understanding.
