{"id":1310,"date":"2010-05-18T16:52:30","date_gmt":"2010-05-18T16:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=1310"},"modified":"2010-05-18T16:52:30","modified_gmt":"2010-05-18T16:52:30","slug":"eh-copyright-enforced-on-blue-plaques","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=1310","title":{"rendered":"EH copyright enforced on Blue Plaques"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Artist and graphic designer Dave Anderson unwittingly breached EH copyright with his piece, a near-perfect copy of a blue plaque emblazoned with the words &#8216;The Man Who Sleeps With Your Wife Lives Here&#8217;.<\/div>\n<p>A limited edition of 250 of Anderson\u2019s plaques went on sale earlier this month but have now been put into storage as a result of EH\u2019s action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were priced at \u00a350 each but we didn\u2019t sell any because (EH) were straight on to us,\u201d said Dario Illari, owner of the Jealous Gallery in Crouch End, north London. \u201cThey sent us a \u2018cease and desist\u2019 letter telling us to stop. The idea behind it was that the artist comes from a very small village in Wales where everyone knows everyone\u2019s business, and if someone was having an affair you might as well put a blue plaque up on their door saying so. We wanted to be a bit tongue in cheek, we were not meaning to offend anyone. I think it was just taken in the wrong way, but it is understandable \u2014 they were just protecting their territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter, from EH\u2019s legal adviser Christopher Brookes, warned the gallery that use of the logo was an infringement of copyright. &#8216;We ask that you cease using the name and logo on your products and remove the images from your website and anywhere else that you may be using them, immediately&#8217;, the letter stated.<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for English Heritage said: \u201cThe logos on our blue plaques are a registered trademark, and so we wrote to tell them we would like them to desist. \u201cIt is obviously a brand association which is very particular to the organisation.
