{"id":1286,"date":"2010-05-06T15:49:01","date_gmt":"2010-05-06T15:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=1286"},"modified":"2010-05-06T15:49:01","modified_gmt":"2010-05-06T15:49:01","slug":"call-for-articles-on-historic-interiors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=1286","title":{"rendered":"Call for articles on historic interiors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The editors of \u2018Interiors: Design, Architecture, Culture\u2019, \u00a0Anne Massey (Kingston University) and John Turpin (Washington State University) invite contributions to the journal\u2019s 2011 special issue &#8216;Living in the Past: Histories, Heritage and the Interior&#8217;.<\/div>\n<p>This issue will examine the theme of the interior as a marker of history. \u00a0Deeply embedded in historical processes, interiors are mutable spaces, shaped and re-shaped over time. \u00a0The issue will seek to reveal the numerous ways in which interiors register and mark the passing of time and question the ways in which time and the effect of social, cultural, political and economic factors shape our understanding and assessment of the interior. The editors welcome submission of articles addressing the following themes:<\/p>\n<p>History and the Interior. \u00a0How do interior designers, decorators, architects and industry use or work with history?<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0The concept of history as it informs design practice<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0The challenge of working with\/within historic buildings<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0Historicism and revivalism in the work of architects, interior decorators and designers<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0The trade in architectural interiors<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0Re-modelling as a design practice<\/p>\n<p>The Re-designation of Interiors. \u00a0How have interiors figured in practices and discourses of urban and economic regeneration?<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0The re-development of war or disaster damaged buildings<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0The re-purposing of obsolete industrial\/commercial\/recreational\/religious spaces<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0Histories of alteration of re-use within a single building type<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0Hybrids (the preservation of the architectural facade \/ tensions between modern interior\/historic exterior)<\/p>\n<p>Heritage and the Interior. \u00a0\u00a0How do curators and those working within the heritage industry address the question of history?<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0Consider issues of conservation, preservation or renovation<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0Explore the curatorial challenges of working with and presenting historic interiors (e.g. periodisation, narrative)<\/p>\n<p>The Interior as History\/Memory. \u00a0How do interiors register changing patterns of social activity or human presence and in what ways do historic interiors act as a focal point of social negotiation\/cultural exchange?<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0Explore agents of change and the re-assignment of the use of interiors in response to the changing needs of particular communities<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0Consider histories of alteration and re-use through study of a single site (e.g. functional shifts from domestic to commercial or religious to secular use)<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0Consider re-modelling and the erasure of history\/histories<\/p>\n<p>Submissions reflecting the latest research on the interior from historians, practitioners and theorists are particularly welcomed.
