{"id":12705,"date":"2016-05-04T19:06:38","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T18:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=12705"},"modified":"2016-05-04T19:06:38","modified_gmt":"2016-05-04T18:06:38","slug":"ihbcs-newest-toolbox-research-note-out-change-to-thatched-roofing-materials-in-england-rn-21062","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=12705","title":{"rendered":"IHBC\u2019s newest \u2018Toolbox\u2019 Research Note out: \u2018Change to Thatched Roofing Materials\u2026 in England\u2019 \u2013 RN 2106\/2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Toolbox-Homepage-image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10592\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Toolbox-Homepage-image-300x227.png\" alt=\"Toolbox Homepage image\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a>The IHBC has published the next in its programme of practice-led research notes with the release of <\/u><u>\u2018<\/u><u>Change to Thatched Roofing Materials Planning Policy and Planning Appeals in England\u2019<\/u><u>, (RN 2016\/2) authored by IHBC\u2019s Research consultant Bob Kindred, with the support of Alison Henry.<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The Research Note looks at the interpretation of national planning policy guidance; the scope of sub-regional and local supplementary planning guidance; recent thatching appeals determined by the Planning Inspectorate from which the possible future direction of heritage management policy and practice can be considered.<\/p>\n<p>Bob Kindred said: \u2018I\u2019m delighted this valuable work will be able to address concerns of the Institute\u2019s members.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It cover the effect of planning appeal decisions where changes to thatched roof coverings have been allowed resulting in either a change in the type of thatching material or a change to a different form of roof covering. This can have a detrimental impact on the appearance of the building, its setting and local distinctiveness, and may harm the building\u2019s authenticity and significance. Such changes are also likely to be contrary to the principles enshrined in the National Planning Policy Framework.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There has been a steep decline in the numbers of thatched buildings in England since the 19th Century prompting post-war government policy to ensure the continuation of this vernacular tradition.
