{"id":12669,"date":"2016-04-29T18:41:22","date_gmt":"2016-04-29T17:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=12669"},"modified":"2016-04-29T18:41:22","modified_gmt":"2016-04-29T17:41:22","slug":"airtight-homes-warning-from-glasgows-mearu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=12669","title":{"rendered":"Airtight homes warning from Glasgow\u2019s MEARU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>The Glasgow School of Art Mackintosh Environmental Research Unit (MEARU) has conducted research into the health and wellbeing of building occupants in new homes, and issued a film designed to help people appreciate the effects of poor ventilation in overly airtight places.<\/u><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>MEARU writes:<br \/>\n<\/u>Make sure you ventilate your home is a key message that people need to grasp if we are to help reduce exposure to indoor pollutants and chemicals that contribute to risks of ill health such as\u00a0Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This was\u00a0emphasised today 26 April 2016 with the launch of an awareness-raising film created by experts in health and wellbeing in buildings in the\u00a0Mackintosh Environmental\u00a0Architecture\u00a0Research Unit(MEARU) at The Glasgow School of Art. The film aims to help more people become aware of the impact of poor ventilation on health and general living environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Poor indoor air quality, particularly in bedrooms, is hard for people to detect,\u2019\u00a0says Professor Tim Sharpe, Head MEARU which has undertaken detailed research in this area in partnership with Innovate UK.\u00a0\u2019There are clear links between poor ventilation and ill-health so people need to be aware of the build up of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0and other pollutants in their homes and their potential impact on health.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Modern homes are increasingly airtight and can also contain a great number of pollutants and chemicals, many of which can have serious health effects.
