{"id":1253,"date":"2010-04-15T15:09:51","date_gmt":"2010-04-15T15:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=1253"},"modified":"2010-04-21T15:10:34","modified_gmt":"2010-04-21T15:10:34","slug":"ud-news-small-is-beautiful","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=1253","title":{"rendered":"UD news: small is beautiful"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Most of Britain\u2019s large urban masterplans have failed to deliver, according the latest issue (163 DP1)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icevirtuallibrary.com\/content\/article\/10.1680\/udap.2010.163.1.3\">LINK<\/a> of the ICE\u2019s Urban Design and Planning journal, and a back-to-basics approach \u2013 based on smaller, more viable plots \u2013 is required.<\/div>\n<p>Kelvin Campbell, one of the world\u2019s leading urban designers and founding partner of UK practice Urban Initiatives, says the problem has been caused by trying to replace the role of the public sector with the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The public sector has expected the private sector to deliver projects that are too big, too intertwined and often too-self centred&#8221;,he says. The result is typically large, soul-less developments that suck that life out of surrounding areas and yet often struggle to prosper themselves \u2013 a classic example being Elephant and Castle in London.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell calls for the re-establishment of a more fine-grained approach to defining and regulating new development, based on a street-plot-block-building relationship. \u00a0While a \u2018big picture\u2019 is still needed, he believes this is better achieved through a series of \u2018extra small\u2019 interventions rather than an \u2018extra large\u2019 masterplan.<\/p>\n<p>He cites the Scotswood housing development in Newcastle and the Aylesbury estate in south London as recent examples of plans that focus on the design and delivery of small, flexible plots.
