{"id":12492,"date":"2016-04-09T17:44:10","date_gmt":"2016-04-09T16:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=12492"},"modified":"2016-04-09T17:44:10","modified_gmt":"2016-04-09T16:44:10","slug":"celebrating-great-northern-culture-art-and-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=12492","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Great Northern culture, art and design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>Local Authorities across the North of England are being asked to submit bids to host the 2018 <\/u><u>Great Exhibition of the North, which is designed to celebrate the culture of the <\/u><u>North East, North West and Yorkshire, with the competition closing in June and the winner being announced in Autumn 2016.<\/u><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>DCMS writes:<br \/>\n<\/u>Towns and cities across the North are invited to bid to put on the two-month exhibition, celebrating the best of art, culture and design.<\/p>\n<p>The competition to host the Great Exhibition of the North in 2018 has opened, Culture Minister Ed Vaizey announced today.\u00a0 Towns and cities across the North East, North West and Yorkshire are invited to bid to put on the two-month exhibition, which will celebrate the best of art, culture and design across the northern regions.<\/p>\n<p>The Government is contributing \u00a35 million towards the exhibition itself and a further \u00a315 million into a legacy fund to attract further cultural investment in the Northern Powerhouse.\u00a0 The exhibition will showcase the great creative and cultural sectors across the North, to help boost the economy in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Culture Minister Ed Vaizey said: \u2018The Great Exhibition of North is a fantastic opportunity to promote the very best of Northern art, culture and design.\u00a0 Investment in our arts and culture not only benefits these sectors but, as we have seen from Hull being named UK City of Culture 2017, can drive regeneration of whole towns and cities.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The competition will close in June this year and the chosen venue will be announced in the Autumn.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, has been appointed by the Chancellor George Osborne to chair the Great Exhibition Board that will report to Ministers on the applications.\u00a0 Sir Gary said: \u2018There are many towns and cities across the North of England that have what it takes to host the Great Exhibition of the North and I hope that many of them put in a bid.\u00a0 We will be showcasing our art, design and culture to the world in 2018 and high quality bids are an essential part of ensuring that we deliver an incredible Great Exhibition.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>For more information please email <a href=\"mailto:great-exhibition@culture.gov.uk\" target=\"_blank\">great-exhibition@culture.gov.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>View the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/competition-opens-to-host-great-exhibition-of-the-north\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Local Authorities across the North of England are being asked to submit bids to host the 2018 Great Exhibition of the North, which is designed to celebrate the culture of the North East, North West and Yorkshire, with the competition &hellip;
