{"id":12358,"date":"2016-03-23T11:07:50","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T11:07:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=12358"},"modified":"2016-03-20T18:02:54","modified_gmt":"2016-03-20T18:02:54","slug":"hlf-funding-for-britains-last-surviving-operational-railway-roundhouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=12358","title":{"rendered":"HLF funding for Britain\u2019s last surviving operational railway roundhouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>Barrow Hill Roundhouse, which was once earmarked for demolition and was saved by local campaigners, is to receive \u00a31.1 million for repair and improvement works, creating a visitor centre and conservation workshop and helping to tell the tale of the UK\u2019s railway heritage.<\/u><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>HLF writes:<br \/>\n<\/u>Last surviving operational railway roundhouse gets \u00a31.1m for revamp.<\/p>\n<p>Barrow Hill Roundhouse was built in 1870 for the Midland Railway and was used to repair and maintain engines and rolling stock.\u00a0 It was one of the few roundhouses to survive the transition from steam to diesel engines and\u00a0operated until the industry went into decline during the 1970s and 80s.\u00a0 In 1991 it was saved from demolition by local campaigners with just 48 hours to spare\u00a0and has since become a popular place to visit.<\/p>\n<p>Now, HLF has awarded a \u00a31,170,600 grant to repair and refurbish\u00a0Barrow Hill Roundhouse, and create new facilities including\u00a0a shop, caf\u00e9 and conservation workshop.
