John Preston, Vice-Chair of IHBC<\/u>\u2019s<\/u> Policy Committee and previously IHBC Education Secretary, is the new<\/u>ly appointed<\/u> Heritage Chair <\/u>at the recently re-structured <\/u>Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance<\/u> (STBA), <\/em>a key body responsible for consolidating links between its members\u2019 support for sustainable approaches to the traditional building stock, and government departments linked to climate change and development.<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n

John\u2019s new role in Heritage\u00a0 is one of 3 new co-chairs that represent the corresponding trio of priorities for STBA\u2019s members, the others being \u2018Sustainability\u2019 (Peter Draper; Rounded Developments), and \u2018Industry\u2019 (Sam Allwinkle (CIAT and Napier University).<\/p>\n

John said: \u2018I have always believed that building conservation and the historic environment are key elements of sustainability; this is why I was keen to represent IHBC on the STBA Steering Group.\u00a0 It is a personal honour for me to have been nominated – by Historic England and SPAB \u2013 \u00a0as the new STBA Heritage Chair while my nomination also recognises IHBC\u2019s role and contribution.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018In both my IHBC and STBA roles I will continue to do my utmost to ensure that traditional buildings are seen not as barriers to climate change adaptation, but as integral parts of the solution.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Of course we all appreciate that I am taking the role at a very challenging time.\u00a0 The Government is committed to 1million ‘low-cost\u2019 retrofits over the next 5 years, and the Bonfield Review will be soon be suggesting how these can be achieved.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Looking further ahead, the Climate Change Act\u2019s 2020 and 2050 targets will bite ever more sharply on all IHBC members\u2019 work.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018STBA\u2019s work, supported by a growing body of evidence, shows that construction industry training and accepted standards and \u201csolutions\u201d have to undergo radical change if we are to solve problems rather than exacerbate them.\u00a0 To achieve this, STBA\u2019s vital work needs to be put on a sustainable footing. I think I\u2019ll have my hands full!\u2019<\/p>\n
