{"id":1009,"date":"2010-01-28T13:25:45","date_gmt":"2010-01-28T13:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=1009"},"modified":"2010-03-24T13:26:11","modified_gmt":"2010-03-24T13:26:11","slug":"winner-of-ihbc%e2%80%99s-2009-gus-astley-student-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=1009","title":{"rendered":"Winner of IHBC\u2019s 2009 Gus Astley Student Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Institute of Historic Building  Conservation (IHBC), the key professional body for built and historic  environment conservation specialists, has announced the winner of its  2009 IHBC Gus Astley Annual Student Award. \u00a0This is the major award for  the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The judge, Dr Roger Bowdler, English Heritage\u2019s Head  of Designation, chose Emma Speers, formerly at Edinburgh College of Art,  as the 2009 winner.<\/p>\n<p>Emma\u2019s work covered energy issues in  Northern Ireland\u2019s vernacular buildings. \u00a0Dr Bowdler highlighted \u2018the  fluency of its discussion of the most pressing of topics \u2013  sustainability and the need to make better use of our inherited building  stock.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Se\u00e1n O\u2019Reilly, IHBC Director, said: &#8220;Topics for the 2009  award were as ever very diverse, ranging from radical engineered  interventions to detailed historical studies. They show the strength of  the UK\u2019s substantial, but unsung, global lead in educating those shaping  the future of our historic places. We are delighted with the quality of  all the work, and that the winners can join in the IHBC\u2019s 2010 \u2018School\u2019  in London this June, the leading training opportunity in our field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bob  Kindred, on behalf of the Gus Astley Trustees, said: &#8220;It is heartening,  at a challenging time for conservation education, that there are so  many committed and talented graduates.
